Yoncalla Preschool Declaration of Rights

Preschool students at Yoncalla Elementary School located in Douglas County’s rural Yoncalla, Oregon, wrote the Declaration of Rights as a reflection on the way they treat themselves and each other in the classroom. In 2023, The Ford Family Foundation supported the publication of the Declaration of Rights in this children’s book as a gift to the Yoncalla community commemorating ten years of investment in early learning. Community members may wish to use this book to inspire early learning opportunities in their community. Parents and teachers can find prompts for support children in their care to express their rights. And children may enjoy seeing their peers as published authors and learning from their self expression.

Since 2012, many partners have supported the growth of the Early Works program at Yoncalla Elementary, ultimately improving education quality and outcomes across the school district. This includes the students themselves, parents and families, educators and school leaders, the Yoncalla School Board, The Ford Family Foundation, Children’s Institute and Portland State University.
