Look Where We Live!

A First Book of Community Building

In this engaging nonfiction picture book, five young friends spend the day participating in activities designed to raise money for their local library. Along the way, they learn what it means to be a part of a community. A map opens the story with each of the places the children will be visiting. Parents and teachers will appreciate that the author stresses the roles of all community members. For ages 4-6.

This book is a great introduction to kids of what a community is like neighborhoods (parks, schools, apartments, etc), donating, businesses, places to meet up at, gas stations, community cleanups, murals, retirement homes, libraries, community gardens, sport games, community workers, shared hobbies, etc and has activities for children to do as well as a glossary to help teach children further of what community means. I think this is a great book to help teach young readers of what’s important.

This book went right onto the community kids shelf at my work as soon as we had finished it. This book is inviting, inclusive and is one of only a few books for this age group that I’ve come across that describes how shopping locally impacts the community. Loved the ideas covered and the depictions of who is included in a whole community.
