As an educator, being inclusive can sometimes be second nature, but I love the ideals instilled with this book, “The Inclusive Mindset.” As a rule of thumb, I always say, “Practice makes Permanent,” and this book really drives that moto home for me. Being inclusive can sometimes be a challenging task, but this book will help you learn ways to combat negative thoughts and energies into ones that prosper and help grow your abilities.

I work with primarily older adults, some of whom are very set in their ways. I try to approach every moment with a DEI focus, and this book had some great information and tips to help me in my day to day. Now that I am done reading it I will also be sharing it with some of my volunteers.

This book was well-written and from a vulnerable, human perspective. The author shared about his own evolving journey to discover inclusivity and what it means to him. It validated many of my own thoughts and challenged others, as this is meant to do.

I appreciated that the author demonstrates that compassion is at the heart of talking about difficult topics. It isn’t about condemning behavior as it about shifting to growth orientated mindset. The authors experience in human relations adds another level of nuance to his words.

This is written in a very conversational way and would be good for someone who wonders what all this talk about “inclusion” and “DEI” is all about. I especially liked the questions at the end and suggested it to my book club.

My biggest takeaways from this book were:
-one inclusion strategy is to be inviting and to notice other people and behave with an intent to reach out and bring in; be available and open, invite-able.
-2 steps for giving feedback: 1) ask if its welcome 2) assume positive intent in the other person.
-be more interested than interesting. Ask good questions.
-the “power of 3” conversation strategy
Thank you for this book!
