Worlds Apart
Poverty and Politics in Rural America
When it was first published in 1999, Worlds Apart gave readers a glimpse of the nature of poverty through the stories of real people in three remote rural areas of the United States: New England, Appalachia, and the Mississippi Delta. In this new edition, Duncan returns to her original research, interviewing some of the same people as well as some new key informants. Duncan provides powerful new insights into the dynamics of poverty, politics, and community change.

Good read. Helps describe the ever evolving disparities of wealth in this country and how politics perpetuate this gap.

This book was very powerful and also heartbreaking. To think that there is so much poverty and inequality still in one of the richest countries in the world is very disheartening. It is past time for this country to step up and take care of all of it’s people!

The book is an easy informative read. It’s a good book for those who want to open their understanding of sociological issues. There was some repeat information but I looked at it as reinstating to keep it fresh.

This was a fairly interesting book, but I had a tough time really getting into it. Perhaps if I lived in the south where most of the stories are from it would have been more compelling.

I enjoyed the real life stories of those who struggle in rural communities and the authors ability to shed light on the inequalities that are faced.

This book is very helpful in understanding how class power dynamics can keep some people elevated and others trapped in poverty, with limited opportunities.

Very dense but the examples work well to illustrate the social context in each community. Quotes from anonymous people interviewed are placed in italics in the text (no quotation marks), which I found disorienting at first.
The author worked at Ford Foundation afterwards.
